With over half of Greece’s caves situated on Crete, the island is ripe for an underground adventure. Zeus was a famous Greek (and Cretan) God and the Diktaian cave is renowned for been the place where he was born. Take a novel approach to your transport to the caves, situated just north of Psirhoyou by taking a ride on the back of a donkey.

The deepest cave in Greece is Tafkos, which is around 475 metres deep. Archaeologists explored down through stalagmites and stalactites to the subterranean riverbed, where they unearthed some amazing fossilised bones of land creatures such as elephants, deer and tortoises, as well as quite incredibly, whales.

Located just out of Kamarea is the Kamares cave, where history is very important, like on most Greece holidays. Of all the caves in Crete, this underground site, more than any other, has given up the most plentiful physical and historical bounty.

If caving is not for you, but you still want to get a taste of the action and have a drink at the same time, then head to the centre of the popular Agios Nikolaos. Housed inside a real-life cave, with an illustrious history, is the tiny ‘Cave Bar’.

There are many more opportunities to go underground outside of Crete, and once you have a taste for caving, it is hard to stop. At the foot of Mt Goritsa is the Peramam cave, which has a fascinating history and is the largest known cave on the mainland.
