The Aquarium

The Friends of East London Aquarium located in southern Africa is a facility which has large and tastefully lighted aquariums displaying many species of local fish. This aquarium was opened in December 1931. It is the oldest public aquarium in the country. This facility does much good work in the field of rehabilitation of distressed marine animals. Some of these animals have been victimized by pollution and disease. Many of these animals have recovered well enough to be returned to the ocean. This aquarium also plays a role in the protection of marine animals by conducting educational programs for local residents about understanding the interaction between the eco system and the health of these animals.

The Southern Right Whales travel close to shore at East London as they migrate southward on the South African coast to their arctic destination. Because of this, the aquarium built a platform, eleven metres high, that perches directly above the surf. Visitors have a wonderful place to enjoy watching the whales. East London is a great place for vacation for those who would enjoy the abundance of waterfront activities. The beaches are magnificent and the inhabitants are warm and friendly.
